L'Espace Van Gogh is housed in the former hospital where Van Gogh was admitted during his stay in Arles after he cut off his ear partially. It is the subject of 2 of his paintings - Garden of the Hospital in Arles (Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles) and Ward of the Hospital in Arles. Today the building houses the town's archives, media library, school of literary translation, bookshops and art galleries.
