Olvera Street, Los Angeles

Olvera Street is the historic heart of Los Angeles, and the city derives its name from the pueblo established here (Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles - Our Lady the Queen of the Angels).

Olvera Street is the historic heart of Los Angeles, and the city derives its name from the pueblo established here (Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles - Our Lady the Queen of the Angels). Founded by Spanish settlers and later ruled by Mexicans, the area has a culturally diverse history which is evident today in the number of ethnic restaurants and shops here. The 600 foot stretch is preserved as part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument. Avila Adobe, the oldest extant residence in the city, stands here at #10 and is open to visitors as a house-museum. Other points of note are the Plaza which marks the birthplace of the city, America Tropical Interpretive Exhibit at #1, and the Sepulveda House from 1887 at #12 which represents the blending of Mexican and Anglo culture. There are several taquerias and souvenir stores dotting the road.
