Buckingham Palace, London

The Buckingham Palace is the official London residence and workplace of the Queen of the United Kingdom.

The Buckingham Palace is the official London residence and workplace of the Queen of the United Kingdom. The sprawling palace has 775 rooms including 19 grand State Rooms and an eclectic Royal Collection. Built in 1703 AD originally for the Duke of Buckingham, the palace is the venue for Royal ceremonies, State Visits and Investitures organised by the Royal Household. The ceremonial changing of guards is a major attraction which takes place daily from April to July, and on alternate days during the rest of the year, at 11.30 am. During the proceedings, the Old Guard is relieved by the New Guard, which arrives from Wellington Barracks with a Band.

The State Rooms open to the public during summer between August and September when the Queen stays at her Scottish Balmoral Palace. Take a tour of the lavish interiors of the most famous palace in the world, and walk up the impressive bronze Grand Staircase that has an intricate pattern of oak and laurel leaves for balusters. The State Rooms hold exquisite Sevres porcelain and luxurious, indulgent furniture. See the Throne Room designed by John Nash, which has been the setting of investitures, Jubilees, and official wedding photographs in the past. Investitures and state banquets are today held in the Ballroom. The Picture Gallery as well as the damask walls of the other State Rooms display a striking collection of art work from the Royal Collection by masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer and Canaletto. The Picture Gallery is also one of the principal rooms for official entertaining and dinners. Book your tour here in advance, as tickets may be sold out.
