The Shingon To-ji Temple dates back to 796 AD and is known for having the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, an iconic 5-storey 55 m high structure. It is counted among the ‘Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto’ that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kondo Hall houses the Yakushi Buddha, the Kodo Hall has the Dainichi Buddha while the Miedo (Founder’s Hall) has a statue of Kobo Daishi who founded the temple. The rest of the temple grounds are made up of a relaxing garden, with many cherry blossoms in the spring. It is also famous for its flea markets, held on the 21^st of every month, with stalls selling clothes, crockery, pottery, sculptures and food.
