Shisen-do is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple built in 1641 as a retreat by scholar and architect Jozan Ishikawa. The complex has remarkable Karayo-style white sand gardens lined with azaleas, and a bamboo stalk sozu that is powered by trickling water to hit a rock, creating a sharp note. The Shisen-no-ma (Room of Immortal Poets) features portraits of 36 influential Chinese poets by Kano Tan’yu.
