Originally the residence of the von der Arken family, the Alte Burg is a 13th century electoral castle surrounded by ramparts and a moat built by Heinrich II von Finstingen, Elector of Trier, to protect himself against the independence movement of the citizens of Koblenz.

Built on the remains of a Roman tower, it has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements.
