Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur

Never conquered in battle, the Jaigarh Fort on the Cheel-ka-Teela Hill in the Aravalli ranges was considered to be the strongest of the three forts in the Jaipur area.

Never conquered in battle, the Jaigarh Fort on the Cheel-ka-Teela Hill in the Aravalli ranges was considered to be the strongest of the three forts in the Jaipur area. It was built in 1726 by Maharaja Jai Singh II for providing security to the Amber Fort and is named after him. Stretches nearly 3 km in the north-south direction, the complex houses a number of temples (Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Vilas Mandir and Aram Mandir), scenic gardens, a museum displaying royal family portraits, and the Shubhat Niwas armory which also exhibits stamps, cards and other artifacts belonging to the royals. It is best known as the site of the world's largest cannon, the Jaivana, which was test-fired only once. According to legend, despite using only the half the design amount of gunpowder, the cannonball flew 35 km!
