Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An

Locally known as Cau Chua, the Japanese Covered Bridge is an iconic landmark in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An Ancient Town, and is featured on the VND 20,000 currency note.

Locally known as Cau Chua, the Japanese Covered Bridge is an iconic landmark in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An Ancient Town, and is featured on the VND 20,000 currency note. It was built in the 17th century by the Japanese community which comprised merchants who sailed here aboard shuinsen to trade for spices and silk. The bridge was built to connect them with the Chinese neighborhood across the creek. Linking Tran Phu Street with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, the 18 metre long bridge has been renovated several times by the Chinese.

The brick base is covered with a red-lacquered wooden pagoda with yin-and-yang tiles running along one side of the roof. The main entrance has a plaque with three Chinese letters 'Lai Vien Kieu' that translates to 'The Welcoming Bridge', which was chosen by Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu during his visit to Hoi An in 1719. The entrances to the bridge are guarded by statues of a pair of monkeys on the Tran Phu side and a pair of dogs on the other, indicating that the construction of the bridge started in the Chinese year of the monkey and was completed in the year of the dog. The stele at the end with the monkeys is inscribed with the list of all Vietnamese and Chinese benefactors who restored the bridge, written in Chu Nho script. The north side of the bridge contains a shrine to Tran Vo Bac De, the Taoist god of natural calamities and weather. Access to the Bridge is free, but you require a ticket to visit the temple, which may not be worth it.
