Old Arsenal, Geneva

The Old Arsenal was originally built as a stone granary in the 17th century on the site of a Roman open market.

The Old Arsenal was originally built as a stone granary in the 17th century on the site of a Roman open market. It was later variously used as military storage, Gendarmerie post and police office. Today, it houses the Archives d'Etat, and is closed to the public. However, visitors can see the battery of 5 old cannons in the courtyard, behind which are 3 beautiful mosaic frescoes depicting key events in the history of the city - the advent of the Roman era with the arrival of Julius Caesar in 58 BC, the Geneva Fairs of the Middle Ages, and the arrival of Huguenot refugees after the Reformation.
