Hauptwache, Frankfurt

Hauptwache, which translates to 'Main Guard', is the central plaza of Frankfurt that gets its name from the Baroque Hauptwache building in the middle.

Hauptwache, which translates to 'Main Guard', is the central plaza of Frankfurt that gets its name from the Baroque Hauptwache building in the middle. Constructed in 1730 to house the local militia when Frankfurt was an independent city, the building lost its original function when Prussia took over the area and houses a café today. The surrounding plaza, originally called Schillerplatz, is a bustling hub right between the main shopping street (Zeil), the Rossmarkt, and the Eschenheimer Tor. The Hauptwache U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are major junctions through which several lines pass. Around the square are the Katharinenkirche and the Palais Thurn-und-Taxis.
