The Grüneburgpark is Frankfurt's largest public park, sprawling over 29 hectares in the Westend district. Laid out on the site of the 14th century 'Green Castle' estate that was owned by the Rothschild family in the 19th century, it was destroyed in World War II bombings and renovated thereafter.
The English Garden style landscaped park features patches of trees and manicured shrubs, with the Botanical Gardens Frankfurt occupying the north-west corner. The site of the Rothschild's Neues Palais is marked by a black obelisk and memorial column by Hans Steinbrenner which stand in the middle of a flower bed. Its former orangery is now the site of Georgioskirche, a Greek orthodox church. The water tower on the northern edge on Miquelallee, the octagonal neoclassical Schönhof pavilion by Friedrich Rumpf on August-Siebert-Strasse, and another pavilion on Sebastian-Rinz-Straße have been preserved from the 19th century. There are trails throughout the area for walking, running, skating, and cycling. The Grüneburgpark is great for kids, with 5 playgrounds and the Kinderstraßenbahn children's tramway that has a miniature tramcar running on a 220 metre long track.
The park also has a 4800 m2 Korean garden at its eastern end with traditional temples and ponds. Gifted by South Korea, the garden features pine trees and bamboo, which symbolize longevity. It is divided into 4 areas representing the 4 seasons, and has 2 Korean style pavilions - Morgentau and Pflaumenlaube, with ponds and cascades.
