The Liebieghaus is a 19th century castle-like historic villa that houses the Städtisches Galerie Liebieghaus, one of Europe's most important sculpture collections with works dating from ancient Egypt to Neoclassicism. The Historicist style building as well as surrounding gardens feature over 5000 pieces from ancient Greece, Roman Empire, and Egypt, Medieval, Baroque, Renaissance, Mannerist, Rococo, and Classicist works, and sculptures from the Far East. Highlights include -

  • marble copy of Naukydes' discobolus,
  • Roman copy of Myron's statue of Athena in marble,
  • Carolingian reliefs in ivory of the Älteren Metzer Schule from the 9th century,
  • 11th century Ottonian crucifix,
  • Romanesque king's head from a statue from the Île-de-France,
  • fragments from a Florentine tomb by Tino di Camaino,
  • alabaster sculpture of the Trinity by Hans Multscher,
  • A Woman of the Apocalypse on a Crescent by Tilman Riemenschneider,
  • Rimini Altar from northern France that depicts the Crucifixion,
  • copy of Johann Heinrich Dannecker's Ariadne on the Panther,
  • sarcophagus of Iset en heb.
