The Arsenale was Amalfi's shipbuilding hub, known during the Middle Ages for its trading ships and large war-galleys which were up to 80 feet long. The aisles of the two stone and mortar Gothic halls with vaulted ceilings are home to the Museo della Bussola e Del Ducato Marinaro di Amalfi or Museum of the Compass and the Maritime Duchy of Amalfi, which showcases the importance of the Republic of Amalfi in maritime history. Highlights include ✓La Tabula de Amalpha - code which delineated the sea laws and customs used in the Italian Mediterranean, ✓map of the Mediterranean Sea Routes illustrating the Amalphitans' commercial triangle between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, ✓Tari coins which were currency, ✓golden figure-head of a winged horse which symbolizes Amalfi’s historical galleon that competes in the annual Regatta, ✓copy of the Pandects of Justinian which was a compendium of 6th century Roman law, and the ✓Consuetudines Civitatis Amalphiae which enunciated the customary social norms of the Republic. Other artifacts on display include architectural and sculptural remains from the Medieval times, model ships, ancient scrolls, codices and manuscripts, tufa statues, and colorful costumes.
