The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Land Nordrhein-Westfalen is a historical coal-mining site founded in 1847. The complete set-up comprises pits, coking plants, railway lines, miners’ housing, and consumer and welfare facilities which reflect the Modern Movement in architecture. This industrial monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for representing the development of heavy industries in Europe. Today, it is a cultural hub, home to the Red Dot Design Museum, artist studios and performance spaces.
