Day Trips, Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a charming, Georgian city that is abuzz with activities all year round, from the Hogmanay street party to the Edinburgh Festival in late summer. Book a day tour to see the many delights the city has to offer, along the historic Royal Mile and further down.

The Edinburgh castle is the most well-known tourist attraction in the city. Built on the core of an extinct volcano, the Edinburgh Castle presently houses the Stone of Destiny, Mons Meg which is a massive 15th-century cannon, Scottish Crown Jewels, and the army headquarters of the Scottish Division. You can get some great panoramic views of Edinburgh from here. Grassmarket, Princes Street Gardens, and St Giles’ Cathedral are other major attractions. The main shopping area in Edinburgh is Princes Street, an architectural wonder of chain stores, department stores and shopping establishments. George Street has exclusive, high-end boutiques for luxury shoppers.

Art lovers should head to the National Gallery of Scotland which houses the best art work, paintings and sculpture dating from the Renaissance to the 19th century, by masters such as Van Dyck, Tiepolo, Pisarro, Monet, Cézanne, Botticelli and Titian. Take a tour of the Royal collection of fine art at the Queens Gallery. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art displays paintings by 20th century masters like Lucien Freud and Adrian Wiszniewski. Also worth visiting is the Dean Gallery which has a large collection of works by sculptor Eduardo Palazzo and Picasso.

Edinburgh has a dark and mysterious underground scene, rumored to be haunted and full of ghosts, poltergeists and centuries-old deep secrets. Descend into the underbelly to discover this fascinating aspect of the city on an underground tour of Edinburgh.

Take a day tour from Edinburgh to explore the gorgeous countryside along the Scottish Highlands. The fishing villages of Fife, Stirling, and Loch Lomond are all a short distance away and can be visited in a day. Home to the finest whisky, Edinburgh makes for a heady experience as you go on a whisky tasting tour, or hop pubs to experience the buzzing nightlife.
