Deep in the heart of Kwazulu Natal is the valley in which the Umgeni River meets the Msunduzi River, surrounded by numerous verdant mountains with tropical rainforests and gushing waterfalls. Midway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the area has several fascinating villages with numerous churches, restaurants and bars serving fresh local produce and meats, Zulu cultural shows, ecological trails, and artisan shops. The 1000 Hills Choo Choo offers steam train rides from Kloof station to Cato Ridge on weekends. Boat cruises are available on Shongweni, Nagle and Inanda Dams. Botha's Hill, which lies on the route of the Comrades Marathon and Dusi Canoe Race, offers incredible views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. Hillcrest and iSithumba are the other main villages in the area.
