Umhlanga, Durban

Situated 16 kilometres to the north of Durban on the shore of the Indian Ocean, Umhlanga is an upscale seaside resort with luxury hotels, grand shopping centres, and golden beaches.

Situated 16 kilometres to the north of Durban on the shore of the Indian Ocean, Umhlanga is an upscale seaside resort with luxury hotels, grand shopping centres, and golden beaches. It was once a vast sugarcane estate, and has developed rapidly over the past few years to become one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa. The Bronze Beach and Main Beach are part of the sandy stretch that continues northwards for more than 200 kilometres to the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. The waters are good for swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and surfing. The 21 metre tall Umhlanga Lighthouse beams out to warn ships that have drifted too close to the shore.

Claiming to be the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere, the Gateway Theatre of Shopping is a paradise for the avid shoppers of Cape Town, offering over 400 retail outlets along with restaurants, cinemas, and amusement park. Further inland, visitors can explore the Valley of 1000 Hills, and the Inanda Dam.
