Neptune's Grotto, Alghero

Neptune's Grotto is a limestone cave complex in the Capo Caccia cliffs of Sardinia with stunning geological formations created over thousands of years. The caves stretch out to 4 kms, but only 500 metres is accessible to the public. The intricately formed stalactites and stalagmites are strategically lit to highlight their features, with algae glowing aquamarine. The complex has the La Marmora Lake which spans 120 metres and is one of the largest saltwater lakes in Europe. The Acquasantiera or baptisimal font, also known as Stoup, is a 2 metre high stalagmite on the lake that collects rainwater at the top, providing the only source of hydration for birds in the area. Explore the various rooms in the complex, such as the Sala della Reggia (Royal Palace), Sala delle Trine e dei Merletti (Hall of Trine and Lace), and Sala delle Rovine (Hall of Ruins). There are formations that resemble a Great Organ, Christmas Tree, and Church columns. The Tribuna della Musica balcony offers good views over the lake.

You can reach the Neptune caves by boat or by road. Ferries departing from the Alghero Port reach the Grotto in an hour, taking your through the scenic Coral Riviera. Alternately, you can drive to the Capo Caccia car park, and descend down the 654-step escala del cabirol to reach the entrance of the Grotto.
