Built to commemorate the victory of Greece over Persia in the Battle of Marathon in the 5th century BC, the Athenian Treasury on the Sacred Way at Delphi housed victory trophies and votive dedications made by the citizens to the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Built to commemorate the victory of Greece over Persia in the Battle of Marathon in the 5th century BC, the Athenian Treasury on the Sacred Way at Delphi housed victory trophies and votive dedications made by the citizens to the Sanctuary of Apollo. The Doric-style Parian marble monument has Archaic friezes depicting the legends of Hercules and Theseus, as well as several inscriptions on ancient festivals and customs, along with musical notations of hymns to Apollo.
