The Cemetery of Mostafa Kamel has four rock-cut tombs dating back to 250 BC which lay hidden for several centuries till they were accidentally discovered in 1933. The first tomb is the best preserved of the lot, with a water system and unique frescoes which stand as examples of Hellenistic mortuary art from the Ptolemaic era. The second tomb has 2 mastabas (flat-roofed rectangular tombs with sloping sides), offering table, sarcophagus and a well, and the other two tombs have not stood the test of time.
