The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th century fortress on the eastern end of the Pharos Island, on the same sight as the Lighthouse of Alexandria which was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It was built by the Mamluks on the Mediterranean coast to defend Alexandria from the Ottoman Turks. Today it houses a Maritime Museum which displays artifacts from the Roman and Napoleonic sea battles.
